Join Plein Air Artist extraordinaire Elaine Mathews as she show you how to bring nature to your canvas.  If you are a beginner, don’t be shy!  This is a wonderful opportunity to learn from the best!

 SUGGESTED ART SUPPLIES: Paletle, Turpenoid (orderless), Brushes, Scraper, Papertowels, Cup to hold thiner or mediums, Canvas boards or panels (8 x 10 or 9 x 12), Plastic Bag to hold trash, Sketch pad

Palm to Pines Birding & Nature Trail Talk – Ruth Nolan and Kurt Leuschner

Join us for a hot-off-the-press unveiling and discussion of the new “Palms to Pines Birding and Nature Trail Map,” co-authored by Kurt and Ruth during a collaborative sabbatical project for College of the Desert. During this activity, you’ll get an exciting power point “tour” of the map, including the scope of its 10 “top birding and nature sites” in and around the Coachella Valley, tips on how to make best usage of the map, tidbits of interesting local environmental and cultural features, and a free copy of the map to take home with you!

Fire in Our Changing Desert -  April Sall, Wildlands Conservancy

April is Preserve Manager at The Wildlands Conservancy’s Pioneertown Mountains and Mission Creek Preserves.  April graduated with a biology degree from Humboldt State and worked at a biological technician at Joshua Tree National Park and Point Reyes National Seashore before becoming a preserve manager.  Pioneertown Mountains Preserve was a victim of the Sawtooth Complex Fire of 2006 and April will present a program on the fire and fire recovery in this fragile desert landscape.

Desert Literature: From Arid Land to Literary Bounty

Lecture by College of the Desert Professor Ruth Nolan

What do the well-known and diverse authors John Steinbeck, Joan Didion, Victor Villasenor, William Stafford, and Aldous Huxley, have in common? They, along with an astonishing number of writers, poets, and essayists have written about the California desert. Nolan, a poet who teaches at College of the Desert, is currently uncovering, discovering and compiling a new anthology of desert literature spanning the history, culture, genre and the breadth of California’s Mojave and Sonora Deserts. It will be published by Heyday Books, a companion anthology to its hugely successful Inlandia: A Literary Journey Through California’s Inland Empire (2006).

Desert Poetry Reading & Discussion: Poetry of the Desert At Home and the Deserts Around the World

Hosted by Ruth Nolan & Jeff Green, co-founders of Petroglyph Books. Featuring various desert poets, including Brandon Cesmat, Nancy Scott Campbell, Caryn Davidson, and others. This event will also feature a brief talk spotlighting desert poetry and poets from around the world, and will demonstrate the unique effect that the world’s deserts have had in shaping some of the best-loved and most memorable poems of all time! Attendees will be given a chapbook of desert poetry to take home, which will include poetry by the featured authors and other samples of desert poetry from poets around the world!
